Otoplasty in Dallas & Fort Worth, TX
Otoplasty, commonly known as ear pinning, is a surgical procedure that corrects the floppy or protruding ear. It is a beautifully artistic procedure that uses a hidden incision behind the ear. The cartilage is carefully shaped to highlight the three dimensional architecture of a normal ear.
In addition to the shaping, the excess prominence is reduced by creating space and suturing the concha (bowl of the ear) back to the mastoid fascia (tissue covering the skull behind the ear) and on occasion removing some of the excess cartilage from the conchal area. The incision is closed with dissolvable suture which prevents the need for later suture removal, and a soft protective head dressing is applied.
The surgery is best done under anesthesia because of the delicate nature and precision required. The dressing is removed in four days, and the ears, although slightly swollen should reflect much of their future and improved appearance. The surgery is done as a day surgery procedure.
